#04 - THE SCIENCE

The cathodephone is applied in the field of acoustics, that is the branch of physics that studies sound. Specifically, acoustics deal with the properties of sound, its formation mechanism, propagation and reception, and its field of interest extends to all vibratory phenomena of matter and to all frequencies.

the first systematic researches of acoustic date back to Pythagoras and his school to which studies sounds emitted by sound tubes and vibrating strings are due. Vitruvius is credited with discovering a certain analogy beetween the mechanism of sound propagation and the movement of waves on a body of water and Pliny the Elder with the finding that the speed of light is greater than that of sound.

An experimental study of sound phenomena begins with G. Galilei who carries out research on the nature of sound and its propagation. Parallel to G. Galilei there are the researches of G. Benedetti for the means of transmission of sound that is the air and of M. Mersenne who makes a first determination of the speed of sound. In 1663 O. Von Guericke demonstrates that sound also propagates in liquids and solids.

In the 19th century, H. von Helmholtz and Lord Rayleigh deepen the study of wave propagation from an energetic point of view. In 1877 there is the invention of the microphone which starts the development of sound information in various fields.
